Dear Friends,

Thank you for learning more about the Disruptive Hope Adoption Fund! We've been happily married since 2013 and had been looking forward to becoming parents for quite some time. Dan has been practicing his dad jokes since our first date. I’ve heard them all... and laughed at most. We found so much hope in the possibility of adoption to grow our family and quickly learned that the process is far more complex, emotional, challenging, and beautiful than we ever imagined.

In October 2021, we got "the call" and matched with a baby due at the end of December. A few days before Christmas, we flew to Salt Lake City, car seat and stroller in tow, anxiously awaiting when we would be called to the hospital and meet who we thought would be our baby girl. The morning we were scheduled to go in, I received a text. "Katie, I'm so sorry... I can't do this." We wished the absolute best for the mom we matched with and at the same time began to grieve the loss of a child who was still alive, but would never be ours. Our adoption group told us in their experience the best thing we could do to heal was to try again. The months that followed were some of the hardest of our lives, including a second disrupted match in March. A year after our first match, our baby boy Luka was born. His name means “bringer of light.” He has brought us so much light, happiness, and joy after what at times felt like a long period of darkness. We want this same healing for other adoptive families.

When adoptive families match, they agree to a certain amount of “at risk” funds ($15,000 on average) that are lost if the match is disrupted. These funds are important and good because they care for a mom’s physical and emotional needs as she faces circumstances unimaginable to many of us. A mom’s decision to parent is a beautiful thing, and we should do all we can to support her! Unfortunately, for 1 in 3 of these adoptive families, giving this money still means they go home to a completed nursery, without the financial means to continue with adoption, and without hope to ever fill their empty car seat.

We were heartbroken that these families, whose pain we knew deeply, had to live without hope. We started the Disruptive Hope Fund in January 2022 with the mission of providing funding to disrupted match families whose financial losses prohibit them from getting back in the adoption process. Since its launch, our community has donated over $55,000, helping 4 families return to adoption, with 2 already welcoming babies into their homes!

While we are thrilled at the success so far, we currently have more families in our network that need financial assistance than Disruptive Hope has funds to give. We have a donor willing to match up to $25,000 in donations through the end of 2022! If you are interested in donating please click below or share this with someone who might be interested in the cause.

Thank you so much for your help. We look forward to providing you with updates soon from families who you’ve helped to provide strength and hope!

With Love -
